Seed Bombs are a super easy and fun DIY project for Spring and the bees will be thanking you. You just need a few ingredients and you are set for an easy gardening project, for you and/or the kids. I did this with my kiddos and they loved making them. You might even have this stuff laying around making it an even better project to do during social distancing.

Here are a few simple ingredients you can use:

  • WildFlower Seeds (I got mine cheap at the Dollar General, $2)
  • Dirt or Potting Mix (I already had laying in the greenhouse)
  • Leaves or straw from around the yard (FREE)
  • Sphagnum Moss or Newspaper Clippings (Optional)
  • Water

Tools Needed:

  • Scissors
  • Round Bath Bomb Mold or Large Measuring Spoon
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Clear Tote for easy cleanup (optional)

I gathered everything I mentioned above and we got started. We used the clear plastic tote to keep things from getting super messy since we were inside!

Mixing the seed bombs…

1.The first thing I did was cut up leaves and straw and add them to the bowl. I cut the material small enough to mix well so it would help compact the mixture. This will help hold shape for your final product.

2. Next I added potting mix and moss then mixed well.

3. The boys added seeds, a little water and started mixing. I added more water as needed until everything was mixed up to a consistency that was sticking together.

4. We scooped the mixture up into a bath bomb mold until well packed then got the ‘bomb’ out of the mold and placed to dry on a foil covered pan in the sun.

We plan on disbursing our seed bombs in our yard so the kids can watch them grow. We will also place some along the woods and countryside close to home.

This project is very versatile and you can add whatever you have lying around that you think would work well in these seed bombs.
