I feel as if we have had really good Spring weather this year and my people and I have been taking full advantage. That also means I have stepped away from my computer and into the woods with my family for most of the month of April.

I love foraging for wild mushrooms in the Spring, specifically Morel Mushrooms. This year I was lucky enough to have a lot of extra time in the woods and I found the most Morels I have ever found on my own. I broke down and ordered a couple if fields guides to help learn my trees and another to help identify other mushrooms I found interesting. So helpful!

Spring also brought loss on our little acre. We lost 6 laying hens within a two week time span at the end of March. We love watching our hens free range and eat all the bugs. Sadly we had 3 hens that were attacked by a dog, 2 hit by 2 different vehicles and 1 that died of natural causes. All of this brought lessons and learning to our homestead.

Remember my post about the Chicken Tractor Coop? Well it worked and we sustainably raised 10 Cornish Cross birds and successfully harvested them. ALL ON OUR OWN! This project was a great learning experience with an even greater reward!

All right, May is halfway over so it is onto GARDENING season. Yay! We have a few things planted but for the most part need to plant our gardens and it is on my TO DO list for this week but the rain has other plans. We always plant after Mother’s Day, if you are new to gardening remember this 1 rule. I know a lot of people who struggled with the last late frost of the year.

Ok, now you know what has been going on in my neck of the woods. How has your Spring been? I hope everyone has been well and surviving quarantine 2020. Until next time my friends.
